This study aims to determine the meaning of Arabic proper names among the
Javanese ethnic community in Ulumahuam Village, Silangkitang District, South
Labuhanbatu Regency. The problem in this study is what are the meanings of
Arabic proper names among the Javanese ethnic community. The theory used in
this study is Chaer's (2002) theory on meaning. This study uses a descriptive
analysis method with a qualitative approach. The subjects in this study were the
Javanese ethnic community in Aek Mahuam 1 and 2 Hamlets born in 2000 - 2016,
with a total of 43 proper names collected. Data collection techniques used
observation and recording techniques. The results of the study showed that 3 types
of meanings of personal names were found which had Arabic elements from 43
(forty three) people, namely (1) the meaning of names as futurative hopes, there
were 26 data including (Khairul Ihsan, Miftahul Jannah and Nurul Hayati), (2) the
meaning of names as situational hopes, there were 8 data including (Ramadan,
Aidil Mulya Rahman, Abdul Juliansyah and Bani Abbasha), (3) the meaning of
names based on the names of figures, there were 9 data including (Yusuf Amalan
Arif, Dewi Siti Fatimah and Mujaidin Ali). The conclusion obtained was that
personal names in the Ulumahuam community were diverse and had meanings
full of hope.
