Background: Sleep disorders are conditions characterized by disturbances in the quantity and quality of sleep in an individual. Sleep disorders are common in children with epilepsy and are feared to worsen the severity of epilepsy.
Objective: This study aims to analyze the factors associated with the type of sleep disorder in children with epilepsy at RS Adam Malik.
Methods: This research is an analytical study with a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted at the outpatient clinic of the Pediatric Neurology Division, RS Adam Malik, from April to May 2025. The sampling technique used was consecutive sampling, involving 49 children with epilepsy and sleep disorders. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test.
Result: The results showed that most of the subjects with sleep disorders were aged ≥ 5 years (77.6%), male (65.3%), had generalized seizures (87.8%), had a history of seizures (59.2%), and were on monotherapy antiepileptic drugs (59.2%). The only factor found to be significantly associated with the type of sleep disorder was seizure history (p = 0.005). Factors that were not significantly associated included age (p = 0.287), sex (p = 0.346), seizure type (p = 1.000), and number of antiepileptic drugs (p = 0.361).
Conclusion: The factor associated with the type of sleep disorder in children with epilepsy at RS Adam Malik is a history of seizures. Age, sex, seizure type, and the number of antiepileptic drugs are not associated with the type of sleep disorder.
