KERENHAPUKH JOY FAITH SIRAIT. Analysis of the Potential and Development
Strategies for Pig Farming in Kuala Subdistrict, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra
Province. (Supervised by Ma’ruf Tafsin).
Kuala Subdistrict in Langkat Regency, North Sumatra Province, is one of the areas
with potential for pig farming development. This study aims to identify the potential of
livestock resources, regional characteristics, and the carrying capacity of agricultural and
plantation waste, as well as to determine effective strategies for developing pig farming in
Kuala Subdistrict. The research was conducted from May to June 2025 using a direct
survey method involving 40 farmers from 9 villages, out of a total of 16 villages in the
subdistrict, selected randomly based on respondent quotas. Data analysis included
descriptive analysis, location quotient (LQ), livestock density, feed concentration index
(IKP), carrying capacity of agricultural and plantation waste (DDLP), carrying capacity
index of agricultural and plantation waste (IDDLP), and SWOT analysis. The results show
that out of the 16 villages in Kuala Subdistrict, only 9 villages have pig populations. The
subdistrict demonstrates good potential for pig farming development, with 7 villages
identified as pig farming areas. The main recommended strategy is the SO strategy, which
leverages existing strengths to seize available opportunities for the development of pig
farming in this area.
