Adaptation Of Lifestyle Among Achnese Migrant Students In Medan: A Case Study Of Ikatan Pemuda Tanah Rencong (IPTR) USU
Abstract
The research titled Adaptation of Lifestyle Among Acehnese Migrant Students in
Medan: A Case Study of Ikatan Pemuda Tanah Rencong (IPTR) USU aims to explore
the lifestyle adaptation of Acehnese migrant students in Medan, focusing on three
aspects of lifestyle: clothing patterns, consumption patterns, and entertainment
destination patterns. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a case
study design centered on the Ikatan Pemuda Tanah Rencong (IPTR) organization at
Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU). Data were collected through in-depth interviews
with five key informants. The acculturation theory is utilized to analyze the research
findings. The results indicate that Acehnese migrant students adopt diverse adaptation
strategies, namely synthesis, adoption, and rejection, in adjusting their lifestyles in
Medan. Synthesis is reflected in efforts to maintain Acehnese cultural identity while
adopting local lifestyles, adoption is evident in the full embrace of local values, and
rejection is seen in the strict preservation of Acehnese cultural identity. This study
concludes that the lifestyle adaptation of Acehnese migrant students is influenced by
social interactions and a commitment to preserving their cultural heritage, providing
insights for the development of migrant student communities.
