Analysis of The Implemantation of Personal Hygiene and Basic Sanitation with Complaints of Skin Diseases in Children at Orphanage Medan City
Abstract
Skin disease is still a public health problem in tropical countries, including in
Indonesia. Household crowding such as in orphanages is a factor that causing skin
disease because they don’t maintain cleanliness among orphanage occupants. This
study aims to see the implementation of personal hygiene and basic sanitation with
skin disease in children at orphanages in Medan City in 2025. The type of research
is descriptive in nature and is conducted by means of observation and interviews
using cross-sectional studies. The population in this study was 236 respondents at
orphanages and the sample of this study was 109 respondents at orphanages in
Medan City with sampling technique using proportional stratified random
sampling. The measuring instrument that was used in this study was a
questionnaire. Based on univariate analysis, the results showed that personal
hygiene in orphanages in Medan City experienced complaints of skin diseases as
much as 65.1%. Children in orphanages in Medan City experienced complaints of
skin diseases as much as 52.3%, based on observations found the predilection for
complaints of skin diseases most often found on the back as much as 60 children
and legs as much as 64 children. Based on basic sanitation that does not meet the
requirements in waste processing as much as 9 orphanages, toilets as much as 1
orphanage, clean water and SPAL as much as 4 orphanages. The recommendation
for children at orphanages in Medan City is pay more attention to personal hygiene,
as skin, hand, feet, nails, hair, towel, bed, and bed sheet cleanliness and also use
personal items to reduce the risk of having skin diseases.
