    Abstract
This research discusses the development of ulos weaving in Papande Village, Muara District, North Tapanuli Regency, which took place from 2000 to 2017. The purpose of this research is to explain ulos weaving in Papande Village before 2000, the development of ulos weaving in the 2000–2017 period, and its contribution to the economic life of the ulos weavers in Papande Village. This research uses a historical method with a qualitative approach that includes the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Research data was obtained through literature studies and in-depth interviews with weavers, as well as documentation studies. The results of the study show that before 2000, ulos weaving in Papande Village was still traditional and oriented towards customary needs, with simple motifs and colors, limited production, and marketing that only reached the local environment. After 2000, weaving activities underwent significant changes: production increased, the types and motifs of ulos became more diverse, and the function of ulos shifted from being merely a traditional cloth to becoming part of modern fashion, such as scarves, stoles, sarongs, and vests. This development was also supported by the presence of weaving business groups and support from the local government. The economic contribution of ulos weaving in Papande Village is evident in increased family income, the creation of new jobs, and the active involvement of women and the younger generation, which strengthens the preservation of tradition.
