    Assessing Student’s Translation Using Back-Translation Method

    Abstract
    The title of the study is “Assessing Student‟s Translation Using Back-Translation Method”. The study purposed to analyze the quality of translation using backtranslation assessment.As the object of analyzing, the students of English Department were doing back-translation on an abstract which entitled „Percentage of Non-Carcass Parts of Local Male Ducks Fed by Commercial Food and Torch Ginger (Etlingera Elatior) Flower Extract Solution’ by Mohammad Badru Zaman, Ristika Handarini, Deden Sudrajat. The student’s translation versions are then compared to the ST1 to determine the change of form and change of meaning. The method of this study is descriptive qualitative method. Questionnaires to collect the data, data classification, data analysis, and discussion were done in this thesis. The result of the study shows that there are 14 inequivalence of change of meaning, and 1 inequivalence of change of form. Under-translation is the most aspect in change of meaning and structure shift is the most aspect in change of form.In some moment, Change form and change of meaning may have no significant effect, but by doing this assessment, a small lack can be found and treat to increase the quality of translation.
     
    Judul penelitian ini adalah “Assessing Student‟s Translation Using Back- Translation Method”. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kualitas terjemahan menggunakan penilaian back-translation. Sebagai objek analisis, mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa Inggris melakukan back-translationpada abstrak yang berjudul „Percentage of Non-Carcass Parts of Local Male Ducks Fed by Commercial Food and Torch Ginger (Etlingera Elatior) Flower Extract Solution’ oleh Mohammad Badru Zaman, Ristika Handarini, Deden Sudrajat. Versi terjemahan siswa kemudian dibandingkan dengan ST1 untuk menentukan perubahan bentuk dan perubahan makna. Metode penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Kuesioner untuk mengumpulkan data, klasifikasi data, analisis data, dan diskusi dilakukan dalam tesis ini. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 14 ketidaksetaraan perubahan makna, dan 1 ketidaksetaraan perubahan bentuk. Under-translation adalah aspek yang sering muncul pada perubahan makna dan pergeseran struktur adalah aspek yang paling sering muncul pada perubahan bentuk. Pada beberapa momen, perubahan bentuk dan perubahan makna mungkin tidak memiliki pengaruh signifikan, tetapi dengan melakukan penilaian ini, sebuah kekurangan kecil dapat ditemukan dan diperbaiki untuk meningkatkan kualitas terjemahan.
