Prehypertension is a condition of blood pressure that is above normal limits but has not yet reached the threshold of hypertension with a range of 130-139 mmHg/85-89 mmHg. Prehypertension is an early indicator of cardiovascular disease risk. This study aims to determine the determinants of prehypertension among students at the University of North Sumatra by examining lifestyle factors and family history of hypertension. This study uses a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 128 students aged 19-24 years who were purposively selected from 16 faculties. Data were collected through questionnaires covering alcohol consumption, smoking behavior, sleep quality, gadget use and family history of hypertension, as well as blood pressure measurements. Univariate data were analyzed descriptively, bivariate data were analyzed using the chi-square test and multivariate data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression. The results showed that the proportion of prehypertension among University of North Sumatra students was 72 people (56,3%). Based on the chi-square test, there was a significant association between gadget use (p 0,001), sleep quality (p 0,004), and family history of hypertension (p 0,025) with the occurrence of prehypertension, while alcohol consumption and smoking behavior were not significantly associated with the occurrence of prehypertension. The results of the multiple logistic regression test showed that gadget use was significantly associated with prehypertension (p=0,000; OR=8,784). Students who used gadgets frequently were 8,7 times more likely to have prehypertension. The results of this study indicate that gadget use is the factor most associated with the occurrence of prehypertension. Students detected with prehypertension are advised to have their blood pressure checked regularly, improve their sleep quality, and reduce their gadget use.en_US
