Correlation Between Grit and Big Five Personality Traits Elementary School Teachers in Sidikalang
Abstract
In the ever-changing field of education, teachers are expected to possess strong
psychological characteristics, one of which is grit the passion and perseverance to
achieve long term goals. This study aims to examine the relationship between grit
and the Big Five Personality traits among public elementary school teachers in
Sidikalang District. The instruments used were a grit scale based on Duckworth’s
theory developed by the research team of the Grit Scale at the Faculty
Psychology, North of Sumatra and the IPIP-BFM-25 translated by Akhtar and
Azwar scale to measure the five personality traits. Data analysis was conducted
using Pearson Product Moment correlation. The results showed that the
correlation between grit and conscientiosness was positive but not significantly
related (r = 0,014; p= 0,918). The correlation with extraversion (r = -0,247; p=
0,057), agreeableness ( r = -0,166; p= 0,205), neuroticism (r = -0,131; p= 0,318),
and openness (r = 0,141; p= 0,283).Based on the results of this study, it shows that
grit is an aspect of an individual that is not always related to the personality type
that a has person.
