Abstract
Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) or sweet potato is a tuber plant. which is widely planted in Indonesia, because it can grow well in tropical and subtropical areas. Sweet potato is a plant commodity that is often consumed in Indonesia as a substitute for carbohydrates. However, the lack of information about the types of sweet potatoes in Medan City makes it difficult to develop varieties that suit consumer desires. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify the diversity of sweet potato types traded in Medan City in terms of morphological differences. This study was conducted at 3 large markets in Medan City, North Sumatra from June 2025 to July 2025, using an exploratory descriptive method by identifying and describing the types of sweet potatoes traded. Sweet potato observations were carried out at 3 market locations in Medan City, namely the Kampung Lalang market, the Sei Sikambing market and the Brastagi supermarket. The results of the study showed that the identification of the types of sweet potatoes traded in the Medan city market had diversity in tuber weight, tuber diameter, and tuber length. And the identification of morphological characters shows that there is diversity between various types of sweet potatoes in skin color, tuber flesh color, and tuber shape.
