This research aims to analyze the types of code-switching and the factors causing
its occurrence in travel vlogs in Makkah on the YouTube channel of Alman
Mulyana. The study employs Hoffman’s theory of code-switching types and causal
factors published in nineteen ninety-one. A qualitative descriptive approach was
applied using observation and note-taking techniques. Data were obtained from
eleven vlog videos selected through purposive sampling based on the relevance of
alternating Arabic and Indonesian during interactions throughout the journey. The
findings show that among twenty instances of code-switching identified, inter-
sentential switching was the most dominant type, with twelve occurrences,
followed by intra-sentential switching with six instances, and tag switching with
two instances. Regarding causal factors, the most frequent was the intention to
clarify the speech content for the interlocutor with thirteen cases, followed by
repetition for clarification with three cases, interjection with one case, expressing
group identity with one case, and being emphatic about something with one case.
The factors of quoting others and talking about a particular topic were not found in
this study. The conclusion of this research is that code-switching in Alman
Mulyana’s vlogs is used communicatively for direct interlocutors and vlog
audiences, and the dominance of inter-sentential code-switching indicates that
Alman’s proficiency in Arabic is quite good, allowing him to use it almost on par
with his second language
