Representation Of Teenage Friendship In Zhu Yi's Novel "When I Fly Towards You": A Study In Literary Sociology
Abstract
Zhu Yi's novel When I Fly Towards You (Chinese:
当我飞奔向你 ; Pinyin: Dāng Wǒ Fēi Bēn Xiàng Nǐ) is a work of young adult literature that explores the themes of friendship and adolescent relationships amid academic pressure and social expectations in contemporary China. Teenage friendship is the result of complex interactions among various social factors; it cannot be regarded as an independent phenomenon, but rather as a social construct shaped by environmental dynamics, social norms, and contexts that influence the patterns, quality, and continuity of adolescent relationships This study explores how the novel When I Fly Towards You shapes and influences people's understanding of teenage friendship and how the novel reflects the values of contemporary Chinese society. This study uses a qualitative approach with a sociological study of literature as the theoretical framework for analyzing the representation of friendship among teenagers in this novel. The textual data consists of relevant quotations from the novel in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. The results show that there are 20 data points found in this study, and the dominant element in this study is support in friendship. This aspect is significantly reflected in almost all character interactions, both in the form of emotional support, such as listening to complaints and providing encouragement, and practical support, such as helping with studies and providing solutions. It can be concluded that this novel not only represents the dynamics of teenage relationships, but also reflects the social construction of friendship that is developing in the context of present-day Chinese society.
