Makna dan Alasan Pribadi Pemakaian Gamis pada Mahasiswi di Universitas Sumatera Utara
The Meaning and Personal Reasons for Wearing the Gamis by Female Students at the University of North Sumatra
Abstract
This research explores the meaning and personal reasons behind the use of gamis among female students at Universitas Sumatera Utara. The gamis, as a Muslim women’s garment, is not only perceived as a religious obligation but also chosen for personal comfort, spiritual motivation, and as a form of self-expression in the public sphere of the campus. Using a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews and observation, this study reveals that students’ reasons for wearing gamis are diverse, ranging from religious beliefs, family and peer influence, spiritual experiences, to practical needs in daily activities. The findings indicate that gamis is interpreted as a symbol of piety, self-respect, Islamic identity, as well as a form of resistance against modern fashion trends considered incompatible with their personal values. Furthermore, gamis provides a sense of safety, enhances self-confidence, and strengthens social solidarity among its wearers. This study highlights that gamis is more than a clothing choice; it is a cultural and religious symbol imbued with meaning, shaped by subjective experiences, internal values, and social dynamics within the campus environment.
