    Abstract
This study explores engagement traditions in Japan, known as yuino, and those in the Karo community of Indonesia, called Mbaba Belo Selambar. Yuino is a traditional ceremony where the immediate families of the bride and groom meet. In contrast, Mbaba Belo Selambar is an engagement ritual in which the groom’s family formally proposes and seeks approval from the bride’s extended family, including parents, sembuyak, anak beru, singalo bere-bere, and kalimbubu. The aim of this research is to identify the performative aspects and describe similarities and differences between the two ceremonies. The study employs a descriptive-analytical method with a qualitative approach. Data on yuino were obtained from a YouTube video titled “結納式(本番編)” with a duration of 7 minutes and 8 seconds, while data on Mbaba Belo Selambar were taken from a family engagement video of the researcher, who is of Karo descent. The results show that in yuino, performers include the bride’s family and the nakodo (matchmaker), with no other participants or audience. In Mbaba Belo Selambar, performers involve both families, participants consist of family representatives, and the audience includes the village head .
