This study aims to analyze the meaning relations in the lyrics of the album Pewaris
Lagu-Lagu Tradisional by Dato' Siti Nurhaliza using a semantic approach. The
focus of this study is to identify and examine various types of meaning relations,
such as synonymy, antonymy, polysemy, homonymy, ambiguity, redundancy,
hyponymy and hypernymy in the lyrics of the songs. Then this study also examines
the most dominant meaning relations in the songs. The research data in the form of
lyric texts from four songs in the album, namely zapin bernasib, sireh pinang,
cindai, pandang-pandang jeling-jeling, were analyzed qualitatively using
descriptive methods. The results of the study indicate that the lyrics of the songs in
this album contain various types of meaning relations, both in the form of similarity
of meaning (synonymy), conflict of meaning (antonymy), opposition, generalspecific relationships (hyponymy, hypernymy), homonymy, homophony,
homograph, polysemy, ambiguity, redundancy. Then the most dominant meaning
relation is the hyponymy relation with a total of 15 occurrences. Hyponymic
relationships were found in the three songs analyzed, namely Zapin Bernasib (6),
Cinda (2), and Pandang-pandang Jeling-jeling (7). The hyponymy relationship is
the most dominant meaning relationship and often appears in three songs which
show the use of rich vocabulary and layers of meaning in the Malay cultural context.
The existence of a dominant hyponymic relationship indicates that the lyrics of
traditional Malay songs by Dato Siti Nurhaliza use words whose meaning is
considered to be the meaning of other expressions. This research is expected to
contribute to the development of Malay language and literature studies, especially
in understanding the richness of meaning contained in traditional song lyrics as a
cultural heritage.
