Design and Construction of a Shrimp Dryer Using a Heat Pump System With 1 HP Power
Abstract
This study discusses the design and development of a shrimp drying machine using a 1 HP heat pump system. The design was carried out to overcome the limitations of traditional sun-drying methods, which often lead to hygiene issues, long drying times, and dependency on weather conditions. The machine was designed in a cabinet-type configuration with six trays and operated using R22 refrigerant. Experimental results show that the drying capacity reached 9.16 kg in 1 hour, 18.32 kg in 2 hours, and 27.49 kg in 3 hours. The mass flow rate was recorded at 0.0184 kg/s, with condenser heat release of 3.179 kW and evaporator heat absorption of 2.64 kW. The coefficient of performance (COP) reached 5.87 with a total performance of 10.75. The Specific Moisture Extraction Rate (SMER) was 0.9142 kg/kWh, while the Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) was 1.094 kWh/kg. These findings demonstrate that the heat pump-based shrimp dryer is effective, energy-efficient, and has potential applications for other marine products.
