Waste is the residue of human activities that has the potential to damage the environment. Waste is a common problem in Indonesia, especially in traditional markets. The waste produced by traditional markets consists of organic and inorganic waste. This waste can be reduced in volume through proper management systems. The Beruang Traditional Market is located in Medan Kota District, Medan City. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effectiveness of waste management carried out by the traders of Beruang Market in Medan City.
This study uses a qualitative research method. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews, observations, documentation, and literature review. The research informants include market traders, market cleaning staff, and market visitors. Data analysis was conducted using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The theory used is effectiveness, which includes the achievement of goals, conformity between planning and realization, utilization of resources, and satisfaction with results.
The results of the study show that the effectiveness of waste management carried out by traders is still not effective. This is evident from the fact that traders are not directly involved in waste management and rely solely on market cleaning staff.
