Strategi Penerjemahan Kata Sapaan dalam Drama Story of Yanxi Palace

Abstract

Forms of address are linguistic elements that reflect cultural values; therefore, their translation must take into account the social context and accompanying cultural norms. This study aims to identify the types of address terms and the translation strategies used in the drama Story of Yanxi Palace, episodes 1 to 3, which are set during the Qing Dynasty. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with data collected through observation and note-taking techniques, focusing on words and phrases that contain address terms. The analysis reveals nine types of address terms found in the drama: kinship terms, name-based terms, pronoun forms, professional titles, fictive kinship terms, honorifics, modest forms, pet name, and derogatory terms. In addition, seven translation strategies are identified: translation using more general words, more neutral or less expressive words, cultural substitution, loanwords, related paraphrase, unrelated paraphrase, and omission. The findings indicate that although the translation is fairly communicative, consistency and cultural sensitivity are still required to preserve the social meanings and relationships between characters in the translated text.
