Industrial issues related to employment in Medan continue to be a controversial topic, particularly in the manufacturing industry. Exploitation of the powerless workforce, whose livelihoods depend on employers/factory owners, through work systems and regulations that violate the Labor Law, also leads to alienation. This researcher sought to understand the processes of exploitation and alienation experienced by workers at the PT. INO ALAM NUSA factory in the Medan-Tanjung Morawa area, Tanjung Baru Village, Deli Serdang Regency.
This study utilized Karl Marx's theory of class exploitation and alienation, Dahrendorf's theory of authority, and Blau's theory of unequal exchange to examine the issues. The method used was descriptive research with a qualitative approach to explore the exploitation experienced by aluminum factory workers in depth. The research subjects were workers who had worked at the aluminum factory for more than a year. This research found that the exploitation of aluminum factory workers by employers is related to work regulations and systems, as observed in working hours that exceed normal limits, disproportionate wages and work risks, labor exploitation, and issues related to insurance and worker safety. This exploitation of these regulations and work systems also creates alienation, including alienation from religious activities, time with family, fellow workers, productive activities outside the factory, and human potential. This continues due to the powerlessness of workers who need work despite being aware that the factory/company is exploiting them.
