Sarune Bolon is one of the musical instruments of the Toba Batak Tribe in the Gondang Bolon or Gondang Sabangunan ensemble whose function is to carry the melody. Sarune is included in the double reed aerophone group. Sarune Silahisabungan is a different form from Sarune Bolon because it has a smaller size and different playing techniques. The purpose of this study is to describe the process of making and playing techniques of Sarune Silahisabungan. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research through observation, fieldwork, interviews, documentation, and laboratory work. The theory used in this study is Khasima Susumu's theory with a structural and functional approach, and the classification of musical instruments based on the main source of vibration of the sound from Curt Sachs and Hornbostel. The process of making Sarune Silahisabungan starts from the selection of materials, measuring each part of the Sarune, the forming process to finishing and tuning so that the Sarune Silahisabungan produced is precise. The techniques required to master the instrument include circular breathing, fingering, and blowing techniques.
