The Effect of Fearful Attachment on Self-Esteem in Students Syahira Nurfadhilah Fadhli dan Rahma Fauzia

ABSTRACT Syahira Nurfadhilah Fadhli dan Rahma Fauzia College is often a psychologically vulnerable period for students, during which self-esteem plays an important role. One predictor of self-esteem is attachment style, particularly fearful attachment, which is characterized by negative views of oneself and others and a fear of rejection in close relationships. This study aims to determine the effect of fearful attachment on self-esteem among university students. Fearful attachment is an attachment style characterized by negative views of oneself and others, as well as a fear of forming close relationships due to concerns about rejection. Meanwhile, self-esteem refers to an individual's assessment of their own value and worth. This study used a quantitative approach with an explanatory method. The sample consisted of 411 students between the aged of 18–25 years from various universities in Indonesia, selected using purposive sampling. The instruments used were the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Data analysis was performed using simple linear regression using SPSS. The results showed that fearful attachment had a significant negative effect on self-esteem (t = -6.646; p < 0.001) and the coefficient of determination was (R²) .097. These findings indicate that the higher the level of fearful attachment in students, the lower their level of self-esteem. These results reinforce the theoretical understanding that insecure attachment styles can hinder the development of positive self-esteem in individuals.
