dc.description.abstractHeat-cured acrylic resin is the polymer of choice for denture bases, but it is often subject to cracking and fracture. The addition of fibers to acrylic resins has been investigated to improve mechanical properties including transverse strength. Banana stem fiber is a natural fiber that has superior mechanical properties compared to other natural fibers. The purpose of this study is to determine the difference in transverse strength of heat-cured acrylic resin after the addition of barangan banana stem fiber stained with 30% red dragon fruit extract with continuous unidirectional orientation. The samples were plate-shaped of heat-cured acrylic resins (65 x 10 x 2.5 mm). A total of 32 samples were divided into two groups (n=16), namely group I (without fiber addition), and group II (with fiber addition). The barangan banana stem fibers were colored by soaking in 30% red dragon fruit extract. Heat-cured acrylic resin mixed with the ratio of 2.3 g powder :1 ml liquid was put into 1/3 part of the mold. A total of 3 spun fibers with a length of 65 mm and a thickness of 0.5-1.5 mm were put into the mold and arranged in a continuous unidirectional orientation and then another 2/3 of acrylic resin mixture was added on top of the fibers and pressed. The curing process was carried out in a water bath from room temperature until it reached 74oC for 2 hours and raised to 100oC for 1 hour and then final finishing and polishing. Transverse strength testing using Universal Testing Machine with a load cell of 500 Kgf at a speed of 5 mm/min. Data were tested using the unpaired t-test. The mean and standard deviation of transverse strength values in group I (without addition of banana fibers) was 75.37 MPa and in group II (with addition of banana fibers) was 73.78 MPa. The unpaired t-test showed that there was no significant difference in transverse strength (p>0.05) with a value of p=0.547. It can be concluded that there is a difference in transverse strength between group I and group II, but not significant.en_US
