Hubungan Social Media Engagement dengan Psychological Well-Being pada Remaja Akhir

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between social media engagement (SME) and psychological well-being (PWB) among late adolescents. The study involved 384 respondents selected through insidental sampling at the University of Sumatera Utara. This research employed a quantitative correlational method. The SME variable was measured using the Social Media Engagement Adolescent Scale (SMEAS), consisting of 24 items covering affective, behavioral, and cognitive dimensions. The PWB variable was measured using the Brief Scale of Psychological Well-Being for Adolescents (BSPWB-A), consisting of 20 items covering self-acceptance, positive interpersonal relationships, autonomy, and life development. Data analysis using Spearman’s correlation revealed a significant negative relationship between SME and PWB, with Spearman’s rho of r = -0.465 and a significance level of p < 0.001. These findings indicate that high social media engagement may potentially decrease the psychological well-being of late adolescents in Medan. Therefore, digital literacy is needed to minimize its negative impacts.
