This study aims to determine the conservation of library materials at the Library
and Regional Archives Office of Tebing Tinggi City. This study uses Rachman's
(2017) theory, which covers active and passive conservation activities in libraries.
This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive research type. The results
show that active conservation has been carried out, but it is still basic, technical,
and does not refer to professional standards. The practices applied, such as cleaning
documents with simple tools, emergency handling of damaged library materials, the
use of tape in the lamination process, and manual plastic coating, are more oriented
towards visual care and short-term reading functions than long-term preservation.
Passive conservation is also carried out, but it does not meet ideal standards.
Temperature and humidity control only rely on air conditioning and ventilation
without hygrometer monitoring. Lighting is more aimed at user comfort. Pest
control only uses camphor without standard procedures. Thus, the conservation of
library materials at the Tebing Tinggi City Library and Regional Archives Office is
still practical and situational in nature, requiring policy strengthening, improvement
of supporting facilities, and the implementation of conservation procedures in
accordance with scientific standards in order to ensure the sustainability of the
collection's preservation.
