| dc.description.abstract | Background: Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide, resulting from disrupted blood flow to the brain. Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, but its influence on the severity of acute ischemic stroke remains inconsistent across studies. Objective: To determine the differences in the severity of acute ischemic stroke in patients with and without a history of hypertension at Prof. dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Universitas Sumatera Utara Hospital, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan, 20155, INDONESIA. Methods: This study employed a comparative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach involving 62 patients with acute ischemic stroke during 2023–2024. Data were obtained from medical records, including age, sex, history of hypertension, and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores. Differences between groups were analyzed using the Chi-square test. Results: Most patients were aged ≥60 years (54.8%), female (64.5%), and had a history of hypertension (72.6%). The majority experienced mild stroke severity based on NIHSS scores (62.9%). Statistical analysis showed no significant difference between hypertension history and acute ischemic stroke severity (p = 0.174). Conclusion: Although a descriptive trend was observed, a history of hypertension was not significantly associated with the severity of acute ischemic stroke based on statistical analysis | en_US |
