    Abstract
Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic condition characterized by progressive airflow limitation, leading to reduced functional capacity. Pulmonary function is commonly assessed using the Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV₁), while functional capacity is measured through the Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT). However, the relationship between these two parameters remains inconsistent across studies. Objective: To determine the relationship between FEV₁ values and the six-minute walk distance (6MWD) in COPD patients at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Hospital, Medan. Method: This study was an observational analytic research with a retrospective cross-sectional design. Secondary data were obtained from the medical records of 100 COPD patients who met the inclusion criteria at the Teaching Hospital Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan, 20155, Indonesia. The variables analyzed included FEV₁ (% predicted) and 6MWD (meters). The relationship between variables was analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. Results: The analysis showed no significant relationship between FEV₁ values and the six-minute walk distance (p > 0.05). Conclusion: There was no significant correlation between FEV₁ and the six-minute walk distance in COPD patients. This finding may be due to the fact that the two variables assess different aspects: FEV₁ reflects the degree of airway obstruction, while the six-minute walk test evaluates the patient’s overall functional capacity, which is influenced by other factors such as muscle strength, nutritional status, and cardiovascular condition.
