Background. Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) is a chronic
inflammation of the middle ear characterized by tympanic membrane perforation and persistent purulent discharge. It remains common in developing countries and may cause complications such as mastoiditis and permanent hearing loss.
Objective. To determine the characteristics of CSOM patients at Adam Malik General Hospital Medan from January to December 2024. Methods. A descriptive retrospective study with a cross-sectional approach using medical records of 76 CSOM patients. Results. The most common age group was 15–24 years (31.6%),
males (51.3%) were slightly more than females, otorrhea was the main complaint (72.4%), central perforation (46.8%), benign type (58.1%), cultures revealed other microorganisms (43.4%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (23.7%), and
Staphylococcus aureus (22.4%), CT scans mastoid/temporal mostly showed mastoiditis (90.8%), and conductive hearing loss (76.6%). Conclusion. CSOM is most common in young males with otorrhea as the main complaint and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as the most frequent pathogen.
