Analysis of the Effect of Quenching Process on the Mechanical Properties and Microstructural Characteristics of Honda Revo Connecting Rods Made of Al-Cu-Mg Cast Metal Using the Sand Casting Method
Abstract
This study was to determine the effect of quenching cooling process on the casting results of Al-Mg-Cu alloy metal as a material for making Honda Revo connecting rod by sand casting method. The composition of the alloy is 95.24% aluminum, 4.6% copper, and 0.25% magnesium. The alloy was melted at 680℃-750℃ for 2 hours and cast on silica sand molds. The metal alloy was then heat treated and cooled in different cooling media, such as water, SAE90 oil and room temperature air. Tensile testing, Brinell hardness and metallurgical microstructure were conducted to determine the mechanical properties and microstructure characteristics of the material. Three tests were run on each quenching material in each test variant. The results showed that water cooling media produced the best alloy metal material with an average impact value of 0.108 J, brinell hardness value of 30.88 BHN and did not produce materials with a high level of porosity.
