Makna Simbolis dalam Cerita Rakyat Putri Andam Dewi

Abstract

Literature work aims to teach and entertain and fulfill inner satisfaction. Folktale is one of the literature work. Folktale is the literature work that contains imaginative elements that works as a symbol to tell the moral value of the story and help readers to understand the storyline because it relates to the intrinsic elements. This study describes the symbolic meaning of imaginative elements in Putri Andam Dewi folktale to find out the moral value behind it and if the elements related to the intrinsic elements. This study use semiotics study. This study use qualitative method to presents data by word, phrase, sentence, and paragraph. The data of this study source by Putri Andam Dewi folktale that was published by Balai Bahasa Sumatera Utara and other relevant literatures. The result of this study shows that there are imaginative elements in characters and plots of Putri Andam Dewi, which are (1) Burung Garuda, (2) Sutan Gambang Patuanan, (3) Sutan Gambang Patuanan’s victory, (4) Curse towards Putri Andam Dewi, and (5) The transformation of the hole that kept Burung Garuda’s head. The imaginative elements indicate a symbolic meaning that analysed by its denotative meaning, conotative meaning, and myth, which are (1) Symbol of challenge, threat, and danger in human’s lives, (2) Symbol of an ideal leadership, (3) Symbol of goodness overcomes evil, (4) Symbol of law of moral violations, and (5) Symbol of bad memories. The symbolic meaning summarize that the imaginative elements of Putri Andam Dewi have a meaning and related to the intrinsic elements.
