Prevalence of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Patients at Prof. Dr. Prof Chairuddin P. Lubis Hospital Universitas Sumatera Utara in 2024
Abstract
Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a malignancy with a high incidence in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. However, hospital-based prevalence data, particularly at the level of specific service units, remain limited. Objective: To determine the prevalence and demographic characteristics of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Hospital, Universitas Sumatera Utara, in 2024, including the prevalence within the ENT outpatient clinic. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study used a total sampling technique. Data were obtained from medical records of patients diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma from 1 Januari to 31 December, 2024, and analyzed descriptively using SPSS. Results: Of 108 medical records reviewed, 15 met the inclusion criteria. The overall hospital prevalence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma was 0.0109%, while the prevalence within the ENT outpatient clinic reached 0.283%. Most patients were male (73.3%), aged 56–65 years, predominantly of Batak ethnicity, and commonly worked as farmers (33.3%). Conclusion: The overall prevalence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Hospital was low; however, a higher prevalence was observed within the ENT outpatient clinic, reflecting a more concentrated burden of cases in this specialty unit. Most cases occurred in older male patients of Batak ethnicity.
