Elasmobranchii fish are an important fishery resource with high economic
and ecological value. However, their biological characteristics of slow growth and
low reproductive rates make this group vulnerable to overfishing. This study aimed
to identify the species of Elasmobranchii landed in the waters of Sibolga City, North
Sumatra Province, and to analyze the species composition, economic value, and
conservation status. A descriptive method was employed through direct field
observations conducted at the Sibolga Fish Landing Site (TPI) and Tangkahan
Renta Sari from July to September 2024. The results showed a total of 17
Elasmobranchii species, consisting of 13 rays and 4 sharks. Species composition
and abundance varied by location, with Neotrygon kuhlii being dominant at TPI
Sibolga and Aetobatus narinari at Tangkahan Renta Sari. Most of the individuals
caught were classified as adults, indicating intensive fishing pressure. Conservation
status based on the IUCN Red List and CITES classification revealed that several
species fall under threatened categories. These findings emphasize the need for
proper fisheries management and conservation efforts to ensure sustainable
exploitation of Elasmobranchii resources in Sibolga waters. This study provides
essential baseline data for future conservation planning and fisheries policy
development.
