    Abstract
Boric acid is a chemical that is needed in Indonesia because of its uses in various industries, including the pharmaceutical, ceramics, and glass industries. The preliminary design of a boric acid plant can utilise borax and sulphuric acid commodities produced by the petrochemical industry in Indonesia. The production of boric acid from borax and sulphuric acid through acidification produces a by-product in the form of natrium sulphate, which can be reused through a crystallisation collection process. The preliminary design of the boric acid plant has a capacity of 70,000 tonnes/year and consists of five stages, namely raw material preparation, boric acid formation reaction, product separation, product purification, and natrium sulphate collection. The by-product, natrium sulphate, is produced at a rate of 5,029,16 kg/hour. The utility requirements for the preliminary design of the boric acid plant are 10,778,924 kg/hour of 3 bar saturated steam and 6,937.44 L/hour of industrial fuel. The plant is planned to be located in the Gresik Industrial Area, Gresik Regency, East Java, Indonesia, with a required land area of 8,913 m². The company in the preliminary design of this boric acid factory is a limited liability company (PT) with a workforce requirement of 250 people. The establishment of the plant requires an investment capital of IDR 2,647,873,849,848 with annual production costs of IDR 1,727,584,196,580 and annual sales of IDR 2,218,900,305,600. Based on the economic feasibility analysis, the PM is 9.8853%, the BEP is 48.4766%, the ROI is 16.2284%, the RON is 3.2015%, the POT is 71 months, and the IRR is 50.43%. From the results of the economic feasibility analysis, it can be concluded that the preliminary design of a boric acid plant from borax using the sulphuric acid acidification process with natrium sulphate collection through crystallisation is profitable and feasible to establish.
