Tingkat Depresi, Cemas, dan Stres pada Penderita Kanker Payudara yang Menjalani Radioterapi di Rumah Sakit Umum Pusat Haji Adam Malik Medan

Abstract

Background. Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women in Indonesia. Radiotherapy is a key treatment modality, yet it often causes emotional distress that may lead to depression, anxiety, and stress. These psychological conditions can influence treatment adherence and overall quality of life. Objective. To determine the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress among breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan. Methods. This study used a descriptive quantitative design with a cross- sectional approach. A total of 30 breast cancer patients meeting the inclusion criteria were selected. Data were collected using the DASS-21 questionnaire and medical record information. Analysis was performed using univariate methods. Results. Most participants were in advanced cancer stages (IIIA and IV). Depression levels were predominantly in the normal (43.3%) and moderate (30%) categories. Anxiety was the most prominent psychological condition, with the majority categorized as moderate (43.3%), followed by severe to very severe levels. Stress levels were mainly normal (66.7%). Conclusion. Anxiety is the most significant psychological issue experienced by breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. Depression was generally mild to moderate, while stress levels remained mostly normal. These findings highlight the importance of integrating psychological support into radiotherapy services.
