Abstract

Introduction. Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis often experience increases in Relative Interdialytic Weight Gain, which are influenced by both physiological and psychological factors, including stress levels. Stress may affect adherence to fluid restrictions and potentially elevate relative IDWG; however, existing empirical evidence remains inconsistent. Objective. This study aimed to examine the relationship between stress levels and relative IDWG among CKD patients receiving hemodialysis at RS Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis USU. Methods. This analytic cross-sectional study included 54 patients. Stress levels were assessed using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), while relative IDWG was calculated based on the percentage increase in body weight between dialysis sessions. The Fisher–Freeman–Halton test was used to analyze the relationship due to more than 20% of cells having an expected count <5. Results. Most patients were categorized as having normal stress levels (38.9%) and demonstrated relative IDWG ≤4%. Statistical analysis revealed no significant association between stress level and relative IDWG (p = 0.890), indicating that psychological stress does not directly influence Relative Interdialytic Weight Gainpatterns. These findings may be attributed to the limited sample size, the dynamic nature of stress, and the presence of multiple contributing factors to relative IDWG, such as dietary adherence, fluid regulation, and individual clinical conditions. Conclusion. This study concludes that there is no significant relationship between stress levels and relative IDWG among CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis at RS Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis USU, although psychological factors remain important considerations in the clinical management of hemodialysis patients.
