Background: Pariban marriage is part of Batak traditional customs that still exist today. However, in the modern era, this practice is being questioned by younger generations who prefer the freedom to choose their own partners. The film Pariban: Idola dari Tanah Jawa presents the conflict between traditional values and modern views on marriage. Objective: This study aims to analyze how Batak culture—particularly pariban marriage—is represented in the film, and how modern perspectives influence traditional values. Method: This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with Stuart Hall’s theory of Representation and Cultural Identity. The film serves as the primary source, supported by cultural literature as secondary sources. Results: The film portrays tension between cultural obligation (to marry a pariban) and individual freedom of choice. The characters illustrate the struggle between traditional norms and modern identity. Coclusion: Tradition and modernity in Batak society are not opposites, but interact dynamically in shaping a new form of cultural identityen_US
