| dc.description.abstract | Introduction. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality, and
understanding the local profile of hospitalized patients is essential for
strengthening prevention and early detection strategies. Objective. This study
aimed to describe the demographic characteristics, clinical staging, histopathology,
radiological findings, and patterns of clinical manifestations among lung cancer
patients hospitalized at H. Adam Malik General Hospital Medan in 2024. Methods.
A retrospective, observational descriptive study of medical records of inpatient lung
cancer patients during 2024. Consecutive sampling was used with inclusion criteria
of age >30 years and a confirmed type of cancer cell. A total of 78 patients were
included. Data were analyzed using frequencies and percentages. Results and
Discussion. The results showed that the most common age group was 61–70 years
(30.8%), and males constituted the majority (74.4%). All patients presented with
advanced stages, with stage IVB being the most frequent (43.6%). Adenocarcinoma
was the most prevalent histopathological subtype (64.1%), intrapulmonary
presentation was the most common clinical pattern (58.9%), and lung masses larger
than 3 cm were found in 44.9% of patients, indicating delayed diagnosis.
Conclusion. In conclusion, most hospitalized patients in this setting were middle-
aged to older males presenting at stages IVB, with adenocarcinoma as the dominant
subtype, and lung masses with intrapulmonary manifestations as the most common
findings; these results highlight the need to strengthen primary prevention, risk-
based early detection, and rapid referral pathways to reduce diagnostic delays and
overall clinical burden. | en_US |
