Background: Pleural effusion is a symptom of a life-threatening disease. The number of cases of pleural effusion in the world ranks third after pulmonary Ca at around 10-15 million with 100-250 thousand deaths each year. The prevalence of pleural effusion in the world is estimated that every 1 million people, 3000 people are diagnosed with pleural effusion. Large chest tube insertion is the optimal measure for fluid or air drainage. However, large chest tubes have a significant morbidity rate. Some of the common complications of chest tube insertion are reexpansion pulmonary edema, pain, infection at the insertion site, bleeding, kinking, blockage, pneumothorax, organ injury and chest tube disconnection. Small bore (pigtail) catheters are safer than large-bore catheters in terms of less pain and fewer complications. Pleural effusion drainage in patients using pigtail catheters was successful in 42 patients, with a success rate of 82.35%. Liu et al. (2010), reported a success rate of 64.0-81.6% in patients with different etiologies of pleural effusion. Objective: to compare the effectiveness of patients undergoing double lumen and pigtail catheters on indications of pleural effusion. Method: The study is descriptive and observational, using a retrospective cross-sectional approach, in adult patients who performed the insertion of a double-lumen catheter and a pigtail catheter on the indication of a pleural effusion at Prof. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis Hospital (RS Professor CPL) Universitas Sumatera Utara, H. Adam Malik General Hospital Medan, Indonesia during the period September 2022 to April 2024.en_US
