This research is motivated by previous studies that have not specifically indicated waste generation at the three research locations within the University of North Sumatra (USU). The objective of this study is to determine the waste generation, composition, and characteristics, as well as the appropriate campaign media for the research locations at USU. Measurements of waste generation, composition, and characteristics were based on SNI 19-3694-1994, while data for determining appropriate campaign media were obtained by distributing questionnaires to lecturers, students, and employees at the research locations. The waste generation rates at each research location were 0,083 kg/person/day and 1,314 L/person/day (Rector's Bureau), 0.010 kg/person/day and 1,207 L/person/day (Faculty of Psychology), and 0,205 kg/person/day and 2,303 L/person/day (Faculty of Nursing). The highest organic and inorganic waste compositions at each location were dominated by food waste (21,48%) and others (42,55%) at the Rector's Bureau; leaves (54,12%) and plastic (14,28%) at the Faculty of Psychology; and leaves (37,13%) and others (20,99%) at the Faculty of Nursing. The highest moisture content for organic waste was found at the Rector's Bureau on the fourth day (92,594%), while for inorganic waste, it was found at the Rector's Bureau on the second day (2,197%). The highest volatile matter content for organic waste was found at the Faculty of Psychology on the eighth day (22,020%), whereas for inorganic waste, it was found at the Faculty of Psychology on the fourth day (99,850%). The highest ash content for organic waste was found at the Faculty of Psychology on the second day (0,448%), while for inorganic waste, it was found at the Faculty of Nursing on the eighth day (12,512%). The appropriate campaign media to be used in the Waste Awareness Environmental Campaign at USU for lecturers, students, and employees are posters and banners.en_US
