Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the factors affecting the competitiveness of medium and large family-owned manufacturing companies in North Sumatra. It examines the influence of family business characteristics, business strategy, and company size on competitiveness, with the effectiveness of internal control as a mediating variable. Data were collected using questionnaires distributed to managers of family-owned manufacturing companies. The study findings indicate that family business characteristics and the effectiveness of internal control positively influence competitiveness. Additionally, the effectiveness of internal control mediates the influence of family business characteristics on competitiveness. Business strategy does not directly affect competitiveness but has an indirect effect through the effectiveness of internal control. Family business characteristics and business strategy positively impact the effectiveness of internal control. Company size negatively affects competitiveness and does not influence the effectiveness of internal control. The effectiveness of internal control cannot mediate the impact of company size on competitiveness.
