This research aims to analyze the impact of banking opacity on credit growth and the role of bank capitalization in mitigating its adverse effects. Opacity, which reflects the lack of transparency in banks’ financial disclosures, potentially increases the risk of failure, reduces investor confidence, and weakens the intermediation function of banks. In contrast, strong bank capitalization is believed to enhance financial stability by providing a capital buffer to absorb potential losses. The study employs panel data from 16 ASEAN banks during the period 2013–2022 and applies the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) to address endogeneity issues within a dynamic panel data framework. The findings reveal that opacity significantly reduces credit growth, while capitalization exerts a significant positive effect. Moreover, capitalization is proven to moderate the relationship between opacity and credit growth, indicating that well-capitalized banks are more resilient in sustaining lending activities even under high opacity conditions. These results emphasize the importance of strengthening capitalization as a risk mitigation strategy in the banking sector. The implications provide valuable insights for regulators in designing optimal capitalization policies to maintain financial stability while fostering sustainable economic growth in the ASEAN region.en_US
