    The Effect of Sidamanik Tea on Saliva Flow Rate and Cortisol Levels in Tooth Extraction Patients

    Abstract
    Patients who are about to undergo tooth extraction procedures often experience dental anxiety, which can trigger physiological stress responses. Dental anxiety is a physiological response that can increase cortisol levels and affect salivary flow rate during tooth extraction procedures. Pre-procedural stress is associated with activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, leading to alterations in salivary biomarkers that may reduce patient comfort prior to dental treatment. One potential alternative to reduce stress and dental anxiety is the consumption of Sidamanik black tea, which contains bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids, catechins, and L-theanine that are known to possess relaxation, antioxidant, and anti-stress effects. Aimed to determine differences in mean salivary flow rate and salivary cortisol levels before and after consumption of Sidamanik black tea in patients awaiting tooth extraction procedures. Quantitative pre-experimental study using a one-group pretest–posttest design. The sample consisted of 20 patients aged 18–45 years who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Saliva samples were collected using the draining method before and 30 minutes after the consumption of Sidamanik black tea. Salivary flow rate was measured in mL/min, while salivary cortisol levels were analyzed using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Data were statistically analyzed using the paired sample t-test. Showed a significant increase in the mean salivary flow rate and a significant decrease in the mean salivary cortisol levels after consumption of Sidamanik black tea (p < 0.05). Sidamanik black tea has a significant effect on increasing salivary flow rate and reducing salivary cortisol levels, suggesting its potential use as non-pharmacological intervention for stress management in patients undergoing tooth extraction procedure.
