    Abstract
Introduction. Cervical cancer is the second most common gynecological malignancy and remains a global health problem. Squamous cell carcinoma is the cervical cancer subtype with the highest incidence and mortality. Several studies indicate that histopathological characteristics influence prognosis and patient mortality. Objective. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the histopathological characteristics of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix and patient mortality. Methods. This research employed an analytic observational design with a retrospective cohort approach. Samples were obtained using a random sampling method. Data were collected from medical records of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix at Prof. dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Universitas Sumatera Utara Hospital, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan, 20155, INDONESIA from 2022 to 2024 who met the inclusion criteria. A total of 70 patients were included. Results. The findings showed that most patients were aged 50–59 years, with non-keratinizing type (62.9%), moderate differentiation (60%), and stage III disease (41.4%). Mortality was significantly associated with histopathological features (p=0.008), differentiation (p=0.012), stage (p=0.001), and length of hospital stay (p=0.029). Conclusion. The study demonstrates that mortality among patients with cervical squamous cell carcinoma is influenced by several tumor characteristics, including histopathological type, degree of differentiation, cancer stage, and length of treatment. Worse tumor characteristics correlate with a higher risk of death. However, the type of treatment did not show a significant correlation with patient mortality
