Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) post-laparotomy significantly increases morbidity,
mortality, and healthcare costs. This study evaluates the efficacy of Peperomia pellucida
nanoemulsion cream in preventing SSI compared to standard care in laparotomy patients at Haji
Adam Malik Hospital, Medan.
Methods: A randomized controlled trial involved laparotomy patients randomized into intervention
(Peperomia pellucida nanoemulsion cream) and control groups. SSI incidence, length of stay, and
wound healing were assessed using CDC criteria over 30 days post-surgery. Statistical analysis
used chi-square and t-tests (p<0.05).
Results: The intervention group showed significantly lower SSI rates compared to controls (5% in
the intervention group (n=40) versus 25% in controls (n=40; p=0.012)). Length of hospital stay
was shorter in the intervention group (7.2 ± 2.1 days (intervention) vs. 11.5 ± 3.4 days (control;
p<0.001).Wound healing was also more rapid in the intervention group (14.3 ± 4.2 days vs. 21.1 ±
5.6 days; p<0.001). Peperomia pellucida demonstrated effective antimicrobial, antioxidant, and
wound healing properties through its bioactive compounds.
Conclusion: Peperomia pellucida nanoemulsion
