Waste is one of the environmental issues in Indonesia, with households being the largest contributor, accounting for 46.31% according to SIPSN data. The amount of household waste is influenced by social, economic, and demographic factors. Housewives are the family members who play the most significant role in determining consumption patterns and waste management in a household. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the characteristics, knowledge, and attitudes of housewives and the amount of household waste in Sei Rotan Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency. This research uses an analytical survey design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 8,515 households, with a sample of 100 households based on Slovin's calculation. The results showed that 30% of housewives were aged 22–24 years, 49% were aged 35–47 years, and 21% were aged 48–59 years, 18% had low education, 82% had high education, 38% had ≤4 family members, 62% had >4 family members, 64% had low family income, 36% had high family income, 68% had good knowledge, 87% had a good attitude. The average waste generated by households in one week was 0.936 kg, and 0.202 kg per person. There is a relationship between age, education level, number of family members, family income, and knowledge of housewives and the amount of household waste, with p-values of 0.002, 0.037, 0.001, 0.001, and 0.010, respectively. There is no relationship between housewives' attitudes and the amount of household waste, with a p-value of 0.766. Recommendations for housewives should include reducing household waste and avoiding the practice of burning or disposing of waste in empty land. For the government, it is recommended to provide education to housewives regarding waste reduction and management and to focus waste handling in areas with high population density and high income.
