This study discusses the shift in agricultural patterns from coffee to
horticultural crops in Pangambatan Village, Merek Subdistrict, Karo Regency,
from 2009 to 2015. This shift was influenced by various internal and external
factors, one of which was the decline in coffee prices in the market. The
objectives of this study are to 1) explain the background of the change in
agricultural patterns in Pangambatan Village from 2009 to 2015; 2) explain the
factors that led farmers to change their crop commodities; and 3) explain the
contribution of horticultural agriculture to the lives of the people in Pangambatan
Village. This study uses a historical method consisting of heuristics, verification,
interpretation, and historiography. Heuristics is the search for data through
literature studies, collecting sources in the form of books, theses, scientific papers,
and field studies in the form of interviews conducted in Pangambatan Village. The
collected data was then verified through internal and external criticism to find
objective facts. Then, the interpretation and scientific analysis stages were carried
out, and the final stage was historiography to compile the research results into a
scientific paper in the form of a thesis. The results showed that the shift to
horticultural crops not only provided better economic benefits but also influenced
the lives of the community. Horticultural agriculture has an impact on the lives of
the community. Horticulture has an impact on the lives of farmers in Pangambatan
Village, Merek District, Karo Regency in terms of economy and education.
