Rapid population growth and urbanization in Medan City have led to a significant reduction in green open spaces (GOS), particularly in densely populated areas such as Medan Maimun District. This study aims to analyze vegetation density, spatial distribution, and the adequacy level of GOS in the district. The methodology involves the use of Sentinel-2 satellite imagery from 2024, processed using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), along with mapping of GIS distribution. The types of GOS assessed include public and private: city parks, roadside green belts, riverbank green spaces, cemeteries and private owned land. The results show that most areas are dominated by non-vegetated and sparsely vegetated classes, especially along roads and rivers. Ahmad Yani Park is the only city park in the district, featuring predominantly dense and very dense vegetation. Evaluation against the minimum standard requirement for public GOS—20% of the total area reveals that Medan Maimun District falls short. Kampung Baru and Sei Mati subdistricts are identified as having the highest need for additional GOS. The existence of private green open spaces is also found in Medan Maimun District. However, its existence is uneven in all villages. This study provides a basis for more sustainable urban spatial planning and highlights the importance of increasing both the quantity and quality of public green spaces to enhance urban resilience and community well-being.en_US
