This study examined the effect of self-compassion on posttraumatic growth (PTG)
and the mediating role of adaptive rumination among mothers of children with
Down Syndrome in Medan. Using a quantitative cross-sectional design, data were
collected from 139 respondents through purposive sampling. The Indonesian
versions of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), the Self-Compassion Scale
(Skala Welas Diri), and the Adaptive Reflective Rumination Scale were employed.
PLS-SEM analysis showed that self-compassion had a positive and significant
direct effect on PTG (β = 0.182; p < 0.001). Adaptive rumination also significantly
mediated the relationship between self-compassion and PTG (β = 0.303; p <
0.001). Moreover, positive significant direct relationships were found between selfcompassion
and adaptive rumination, as well as between adaptive rumination and
PTG. These findings indicate that through meaning-making efforts, selfcompassionate
mothers are able to achieve positive psychological growth following
the challenges of raising a child with Down Syndrome. The results offer important
implications for supporting the well-being of mothers of children with Down
Syndrome.
