This thesis entitled "Maria Raja in Ulaon Saurmatua Ethnic Batak Toba: Pragmatic Study", which
analyzes the speech acts contained in the event both from the host or suhut with fellow villagers or
dongan sahuta and the party giving the wife or hula-hula. Maria raja is a mandatory event held
before the traditional ceremony, in this case the traditional saurmatua ceremony in other words is
a traditional meeting. This study aims to describe the sentence form in the speech act, the function
of the speech act and the meaning of the speech act in maria raja in ulaon saurmatua ethnic Batak
Toba. The theoretical framework applied in this study is the speech act theory proposed by John
Searle and Geoffrey Leech. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method that
includes the process of identifying research objects, data collection and analysis of oral speech
data. The results of the study suggest that speech at the maria raja event, including three forms of
speech act sentences contained in maria raja, namely declarative, imperative and interrogative
sentences. Meanwhile, there are five functions of speech acts: representative, directive,
commissive, expressive, and declarative. The explanation of the meaning of each speech act then
analyzes its meaning based on the components of locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary
