    Abstract
Tooth loss can be managed by using heat-polymerized acrylic resin dentures (HPAR); however, this material has a limitation in the form of porosity, which facilitates food debris adhesion and promotes the growth of microorganisms such as Candida albicans. Andaliman fruit, a plant native to North Sumatra, contains active compounds in the form of essential oils, while purple passion fruit peel contains acetohydrazide, both of which possess antifungal properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of brushing with this combination toothpaste on the number of Candida albicans. This experimental laboratory study used 30 HPAR samples divided into five groups: control positive (alkaline peroxide), control – (aquadest), and three groups of combination formulations of andaliman and purple passion fruit peel extracts with ratios of 5%:10%, 7.5%:7.5%, and 10%:5%. The denture base samples were brushed using the combination toothpaste and subsequently evaluated for Candida albicans colony counts. The data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test. The results showed that brushing with the combination toothpaste of andaliman (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC) and purple passion fruit peel (Passiflora edulis) had a significant effect on reducing the number of Candida albicans (p < 0.05). Formulation 1 (5% andaliman and 10% purple passion fruit peel) demonstrated a Candida albicans colony count of 850 ± 251 CFU/mL. This study concludes that formulation 1 was the most effective denture base cleansing toothpaste for reducing Candida albicans on heat-polymerized acrylic resin dentures.
