This study analyzes the forms and usage of wakamono kotoba in the film Haikyuu!!: The Dumpster Battle directed by Susumu Mitsunaka. The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of wakamono kotoba that appear in the dialogues between characters and to explain their usage within conversational contexts. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data consisting of dialogue excerpts containing wakamono kotoba taken from the film. This study applies a sociolinguistic approach focusing on the relationship between language and society as proposed by Budiman, as well as Dell Hymes’ communication theory (SPEAKING) to identify the distinctive slang varieties commonly used by young people as represented in Japanese popular media. The findings indicate that the forms of wakamono kotoba identified include foreign language borrowing, word omission, and phonological modification. The use of wakamono kotoba in the film is observed in informal interactions between characters, reflecting a non-formal linguistic style. This study provides an overview of the use of wakamono kotoba in film, which reflects the characteristics of Japanese youth slang as concise, expressive, and communicative. The film functions as an effective medium for popularizing informal language among young people.
